The most sutiable steel strip raw material for band saw blade 

Many properties are imparted to the saw steel while it is still in the melting furnace,where it is given its correct chemical composition and its purity.

Experience has shown that a straight carbon steel, 0.75% C ,is most suitable for narrow wood band saw blades.In view of their greater thickness,wide wood band saw blades require a grade which has somewhat better hardenability than is needed for narrow sizes.Furthermore,a higher toughness is required of the material,since wide wood band saw blades are mostly produced with swaged teeth.This means that a nickel-alloyed grade, 2-2.5% Ni,is the most suitable choice for wide blades.Like some other alloying elements,nickel improves the hardenability;at the same time it increases the toughness.

The purity of the steel is of utmost importance.Non-metallic inclusions can be very detrimental to a wood band saw blade.Stringers of slag or large ductile slag particles can cause fractures during the swaging operation.If coarse,brittle slag particles are unfavourably located in the blade,there is also a great risk of fracturing after only a short time in service.

However,by holding the sulphur content in the steel at the lowest possible level and by special treatments,the risk of blade breakage due to non-metallic inclusions can be reduced.

Subsequent processing in the hot and cold rolling mills and in the heat treatment furnaces gives the steel strip the desired dimensions within close tolerances and the good straightness,flatness and surface finish required.

The steel strip is hardened and tempered in long,continuous production lines.The microstructure achieved,consisting of tempered martensite, gives the saw steel suitable mechanical properties.Thanks to the continuous processing,the properties obtained are very uniform.

By strictly controlling the heat treatment procedures throughout the manufacture,it is possible to produce a steel strip practically free from decarburisation.This means that the strip obtains maximum hardness all the way through,which makes it resistant to scratching and other forms of surface damage.

To ensure that the surface is absolutely free from defects,steel strips intended for wood band saws are ground or polished in a final operation before despatch.

INIERNAL PROPERTIES

A good wood band saw blade shall give long and reliable service between re-grindings.It shall also have a long total service life and produce sawn goods of the best quality.Thus,the most important characteristics in a wood band saw blade are:
